Teeth whitening summary
Teeth whitening became more and more popular in conjunction with the development of aesthetical dentistry. These days we now many different methods of teeth whitening, which itself is one of the most indulged ways to make the teeth more beautiful and aesthetic. We distinguish two different types of teeth whitening: complete teeth whitening and whitening of one or few teeth. The complete whitening can be done at the dentistry or at home. The difference between the two methods, that at the dentistry we whiten the teeth in about 1-1.5 hours. In our dentistry we use the RemeWhite system, which is one of the most indulged processes since it does not hurt the soft tissues and only minimally causes sensitivity. The teeth can be 8-10 shades whiter after one whitening treatment. This result can be achieved by home teeth whitening, de difference is only that the patient has the responsibility for carrying out the process and the result will be visible in about 1-2 weeks, instead of an immediate effect.
Process of teeth whitening: we create individual trays using an imprint of your teeth, what you need to fill up with the teeth whitening gel and wear it for about 2-3 hours a day or during sleeping. The home whitening is a softer method as it dissolves the colourings slower from the saliva from the surface of the teeth. If your teeth become too sensitive through the whitening process, the whitening gel can be swapped with an anti-sensitivity solution. There is a bigger chance to run into sensitivity issues through home teeth whitening. Through the whitening period, it is recommended to avoid consuming of coloured food and drink.
There are several ways to whiten 1-2 discoloured teeth (eg. root canal treated teeth). The whitening material in Opalescence Endo “sucks out” the discolouring factors from the teeth which will regain their original colour in a few days. In case of healthy teeth that have discoloured the laser whitening is an option. Laser light activates the whitening gel what we apply on these teeth and it can whiten the teeth in depth as an effect of the ozone. The advantage of this whitening method that it does not cause tooth sensitivity.
The special drug-based whitening is mostly effective on discolouration caused by genetic diseases and/or other medicines. The discoloured parts under the enamel can be reached only by using acids and grinding the surface. After this phase the next step is the whitening process itself (at the dentistry or at home). If needed, the whitening can be repeated. The loss of the enamel layer can be substituted by veneers or the remaining enamel layer can be converted mature enamel by using different salt supplementing methods.
